An estimate. Mowing time assumes 80% efficiency for turns and overlap; time your own routes and adjust.

How to use this lawn mowing cost calculator

  1. Enter the lawn size in acres or square feet. Switching the unit converts the number for you.
  2. Pick a pricing method. Time on the job works out minutes from your mower's deck width and speed. Rate per 1,000 sq ft multiplies the lawn size by a rate you set.
  3. For the time method, add minutes for trimming, edging and blowing, your drive time to the stop, and the hourly rate you want to earn.
  4. Set the terrain, your minimum charge, how often you'll mow and how many weeks your season runs.
  5. Copy the quote line and paste it into your estimate, text or invoice.

The result shows your price per mow, the season total, a monthly average for clients who want to budget, and, for the time method, the minutes the stop really takes.

How the lawn mowing price is calculated

The time method prices a stop the way your day actually runs: minutes mowing, minutes trimming, minutes driving, all charged at your hourly target.

Acres per hour = mph × deck width in feet ÷ 8.25 × 80% efficiency
Price per mow = ((mowing minutes + trim minutes) × terrain + drive minutes) ÷ 60 × hourly rate, rounded up to the next dollar, and never below your minimum

The 8.25 is a unit conversion (5,280 feet in a mile ÷ 43,560 square feet in an acre). The 80% efficiency allows for turns and overlap, and matches the lower column in Ferris's mowing productivity chart.

Worked example

A quarter-acre lawn, a 36-inch mower at 4 mph, 20 minutes of trimming, edging and blowing, 10 minutes of driving, flat ground, $65 an hour, mowed weekly for 30 weeks:

  • 4 × 3 ft ÷ 8.25 × 0.8 = 1.16 acres per hour, so a quarter acre takes about 13 minutes to mow.
  • 12.9 + 20 + 10 = 42.9 minutes for the whole stop.
  • 42.9 minutes at $65 an hour is $46.46. Rounded up, that's $47 per mow, above the $45 minimum.
  • 30 weekly visits × $47 = $1,410 for the season, or about $204 a month when the season is spread over its 6.9 months.
  • Switch to every two weeks with a 15% surcharge and the price becomes $54 per mow: 15 visits, $810 for the season.

Pricing by the square foot

The area method is simpler: (square feet ÷ 1,000) × your rate, plus a flat trim-edge-blow charge, times the terrain factor. A 10,000 sq ft lawn at $4 per 1,000 sq ft with a $15 trim charge is 10 × $4 + $15 = $55 per mow.

Lawn care pricing in 2026: what clients pay

Here's what the 2026 pro guides list per visit, by lawn size. Housecall Pro's figures are weekly rates. Jobber's are average prices for mowing.

Lawn sizeHousecall Pro (weekly)Jobber
Under ¼ acre$41–$65$25–$60 (¼ acre)
¼–½ acre$49–$95$50–$75 (½ acre)
½–1 acre$59–$130$150–$200 (1 acre)
1–2 acres$99–$265$250–$350 (2 acres)
3+ acres$350–$600+$350–$500 (3 acres)

Housecall Pro puts a standard residential mow, edge and blow at $45–$90 per visit, with quarter-acre lots typically at $50–$55. Other rates from the same guides:

RateRangeSource
Hourly$35–$68 per hourHousecall Pro
Hourly$30–$65 per hourJobber
Per acre, large lawns$150–$200Jobber
Minimum charge per visit$40–$50Housecall Pro
Overgrown lawn or first cut$75–$150+Housecall Pro
Edging add-on$15–$50 per visitHousecall Pro
Bagging or debris removal$10–$30 per visitHousecall Pro
Both guides also list $0.01–$0.06 per sq ft. That's $10–$60 per 1,000 sq ft, which sits well above their own per-visit prices: a quarter acre (10,890 sq ft) at $0.01 would already be $108.90. ECHO's quoting guide works out $2 per 1,000 sq ft from 2 minutes per 1,000 sq ft at $60 an hour. Set your rate from your own mowing time, not from a published range.

How much to charge for lawn mowing

  • Build your hourly target from costs. Housecall Pro's example spreads $4,000 of monthly overhead over 160 billable hours, which adds $25 to every hour you work. Labor burden adds another 20–35% on top of wages for solo operators and small crews.
  • Add a margin you can defend. Housecall Pro suggests 10–20% profit in competitive suburban markets and 20–35% in high-demand or high-cost areas. The service price calculator turns costs and a margin into a price.
  • Charge every stop a minimum. Loading, unloading and driving cost the same on a tiny lawn. Housecall Pro puts typical minimums at $40–$50 a visit.
  • Charge more for every two weeks. Grass that's had two weeks to grow takes longer to cut. Housecall Pro says biweekly typically costs 15–25% more per visit than weekly.
  • Price slopes and obstacles. Housecall Pro suggests 10–25% extra for challenging terrain, which is what the calculator's terrain options add.
  • Quote the first cut separately. An overgrown lawn can take 1.5 times as long. Price that visit on its own, then move to your regular rate.
  • Raise prices every year. Housecall Pro suggests 5–10% a year for recurring clients.

Lawn mowing time by mower width

Mowing minutes come from the Ferris formula at 80% efficiency. Here's how long the mowing part takes at the deck widths and speeds in Ferris's chart. Trimming and driving come on top.

MowerAcres per hour¼ acre½ acre1 acre
36-inch at 4 mph1.1613 min26 min52 min
48-inch at 5 mph1.948 min15 min31 min
52-inch at 6 mph2.526 min12 min24 min
61-inch at 7 mph3.454 min9 min17 min

That's why lawn mowing price per acre drops on bigger properties: a wider, faster mower cuts each acre in less time, and the drive is spread over more grass. A 1-acre lawn with a 52-inch mower at 6 mph, some slopes, 30 minutes of trimming and 10 minutes of driving comes to about 69 minutes, or $75 at $65 an hour.

Real lawns with beds, trees and gates run slower than open ground, so time a few of your own routes. If you always finish early, raise the speed input. If you always run late, lower it.

Common lawn care pricing mistakes

  • Leaving out drive time. Ten minutes between stops on a 30-minute lawn is a quarter of your time. Price it in, or tighten your route.
  • Pricing the trim work as free. Edging, trimming and blowing can take longer than mowing a small lawn. In the example above it's 20 of the 43 minutes.
  • Copying a competitor's price sheet. Their mower, crew and costs aren't yours. Use local prices as a check, not a starting point.
  • Giving biweekly the weekly rate. Longer grass, more clippings, slower cutting. Charge for it.
  • Forgetting the season ends. A $47 weekly lawn is $1,410 a year over 30 weeks, not $2,444 over 52. Plan your income around your real season.

How to put lawn mowing on an estimate or invoice

Send the quote line as a message or a simple document before you start, so the client knows the per-visit price and the season total. Estimates vs invoices explains the difference. Then invoice the visits you actually made:

  • Weekly mowing, trim, edge & blow, 0.25 acres: 4 × $47 = $188
  • First cut, overgrown: 1 × $100
  • Bagging and debris removal: 4 × $15 = $60

Our contractor invoice template is a good starting point, or make a PDF in the free invoice generator without signing up. In Onigiri, line items are quantity × rate, so a month of visits is one line, with tax rates and discounts if you need them. The free plan covers 3 invoices a month with unlimited clients. A full route needs more, so PRO ($12 a month or $108 a year) adds unlimited invoices, saved service templates for your standard mows, and card payments through your own Stripe account.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I charge to mow a lawn?

Housecall Pro's 2026 guide puts a standard residential mow, edge and blow at $45–$90 per visit, with quarter-acre lots typically at $50–$55. Price your own stops from your mowing, trimming and drive time at an hourly target, with a minimum charge of around $40–$50.

How do you calculate lawn mowing time?

Acres per hour equals mph × deck width in feet ÷ 8.25, times an efficiency factor for turns and overlap, such as 80%. A 36-inch mower at 4 mph cuts about 1.16 acres an hour, so a quarter acre takes about 13 minutes before trimming.

What is the lawn mowing price per acre?

Jobber lists $150–$200 per acre for large lawns, with the rate dropping on bigger jobs, especially with a riding mower. Your own rate depends on your mower width and speed, which set how many minutes each acre takes.

Should biweekly mowing cost more than weekly?

Yes. Longer grass takes longer to cut, and Housecall Pro says biweekly service typically costs 15–25% more per visit than weekly.

What is a good minimum charge for lawn mowing?

Housecall Pro puts typical minimums at $40–$50 per visit. A minimum makes sure small lawns still cover the time spent loading, unloading and driving.

How much extra should I charge for slopes or obstacles?

Housecall Pro suggests adding 10–25% for challenging terrain. This calculator adds 10% for some slopes and 25% for steep or cluttered lawns.

How do I price lawn mowing per square foot?

Multiply the lawn's square feet by your rate per 1,000 sq ft. ECHO's quoting guide works out $2 per 1,000 sq ft for a crew that mows 1,000 sq ft in 2 minutes and targets $60 an hour, so a 15,000 sq ft lawn is $30.
